THE GERMAN THRUST. ATTEMPT TO BREAK THROUGH FAILS. FRENCH CHECK ATTACKS. HEAVY GERMAN LOSSES. Received July 5, 8,25 p.m. Paris, July 6. The Crown Prince's initial attempt to fulfil his boast to pierce the line at Argonne fey August 4; hag fizzled out. A formidable attempt was made for ten days between Cour de Paris and La Grurie wood to smash the line*, and the Crown Prince concentrated 45,000 troops on a four miles front. By a prodigious expenditure of high explosives and asphyxiating shells he threw forces day and night against the French trenches, but the only success achieved was* a footing beyond the first line, tho Germans failing to reach the second trench. The French artillery inflicted terrible losses on the Wurtenfburgers, who approached in massed formations. The Crown Prince's effort is costing at least 10,000 troops, while the French losses are not half that.

Official: A mine struggle continues near Palisy, north of the Aisne. There was a combat with grenades and air torpedoes in the Argonno, without infantry action.

ARGONNE OFFENSrVB CONTINUES. Received July 5, 8.35 p.m. Amstordam, July 5. A Berlin official report says: We continued the offensive in the Argonne. Our booty on July 2 and 3 was 2550 prisoners, 25 machine-guns, and 12 trench mortars. The French four times fruitlessly attempted to capture the positions lost near Epargcs. IWe captured a French position on a front of six hundred metres north-west of Regneville. Our aircraft attacked fortified railway works at Nancy and Domhasle and the barrier fort of Remirmont, GERMAN ATTACK REPULSED. GERMANS SHOOT ALLEGED SPIES. Paris, July 4. A communique states that the Germans in close formation lust night attacked our positions on the sunken road from Angres to Ablain. The enemy were dispersed and repulsed with heavy loss by our curtain of fire and ma-chine-guns. A Maastricht (Holland) newspaper, describing the shooting of Liege residents on June 13, says a woman named Louise Fernay was led to execution calling the Germans -coward's. The first volley hit her legs and she fell shouting, "Vive Liege; vive la Belgique." A noncommissioned officer shot her through the head. I The wife of another victim was told the day before the execution that she 1 could ransom her husband if she collected several thousand francs.
