BREACHES OF THE BY-LAWS. The usual sitting of the "Magistrate's -Court yesterday was presided over by Mr. A. Crookc, S.M. Tsiiili! Bailey. a Native, was charged with approaching and crossing a railway . level crossing, wliile in a motor-car, I without slackening speed. ISub-luspcctor Fouliy prosecuted, and accused was lined 10s and costs £ 1 Is. RIDIXG ON TIIE FOOTPATH. 0. R. Homes pleaded guilty to riding a bicycle on the footpath, and was fined 7s 6(1, and costs 7s. On a similar charge, W. Graham pleaded guilty, and was also fined 7s fid and costs 7s. The borough inspector (Mr. B. Tippins) laid the informations in these cases. DRIVING WITHOUT LIGHTS. Mr. Hon. Quilliam said lie appeared for the County Council in a number of cases in wlrie'h persons were charged with driving without lights. The abuse of this by-law waa becoming flagrant, and the County Cflhc.il had instructed him to ask for heavy penalties in order to put a stop to it. One young man bad been killed through the practice. He. was riding a motor-cycle, when he dashed into a vehicle which could not be seen as it was dark at the time, and it was bearing no lights. They wished to prevent a continuance of this dangerous practice. Most of the cases coming before them that morning were from the Stratford end of the county, being the result of the observations of the borough inspector. but some others would bo brought on from another portion of the countv—-from the Puuiho district. 1 Evidence in all these cases was given 'by the borough inspector (Mr. B. Tippins), and was to the effect that each of the accused was driving a vehicle without lights on the mountain road at Waipuku between the hours of sunset and sunrise. Alfred "C. D. Eggs, who did not appear, was fined. £1 and costs, £1 Bs. Samuel Cameron pleaded guilty, and was fined £1 and costs £1 Bs. Hugh W. Glen did not appear, and was fined £1 and costs <£l 10s (kl. .Tohn T. Hughes, who pleaded guilty, .was fined £1 and costs £1 Bs. Frank Fahisli did not appear and was fined £1 and costs £1 10s "Cel. Ernest W. Gibbs wrote admitting that his vehicle carried no lights, but declared it was not dark. The inspector stated it was quite dark, and accused was fined £1 and £1 8s costs. 'W. J. B. Paton was fined £ 1 and costs £1 15s. R. H. Phillips was charged with driving without lights, and also with having no identification iplate. on his motorcar. For the first offence accused was fined £1 and for the second 10s, the costs amounting to £1 18s.
