LATE MR. ARTHUR STANDISH.

TRIBUTES FROM THE BAli. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, j before the commencement of the business ! of the day, tribute was paid to the mem- | civv of the late '.Mr. .Arthur Stamlish. I There was .present a large attendance uf members of tiie local bar. ] Mr. D. Mutchen, president of the Taranaki Law Society, said it fell to his lot i to endeavor to express the verv great regret felt by the members of the legal profession in New Plymouth at the 'passing away of iMr. Arthur 'Standish. lie sincerely wished that the duty had devolved upon someone better acquainted with the late .Mr. Staudish than he was. Mr. Stamlish was the. first Crown Solicitor in Taranaki and also the lirst president of the Law Society, and held these ollices for many years. lie virtually retired from active .practice of his profession about fifteen years ago. He was among his contemporaries always represented as a very honorable practitioner, and, in addition to this work, had fonnu time to engage himself in many other directions. Mr. Standish secured to the country tie- I'gmont National Reserve, and for this his name deserved to lie handed down for many generations. All the members of , the local 'bar retained very pleasant recollections of Mr. Standish in private life, lie was a good sportsman, a genial companion, and a thorough gentleman. The Magistrate, Mr. A. Crooke, said lie was glad to have that opportunity of expressing his appreciation of the late Mr. Standish. He had never inet Mr. Standish in the active practice of his profession, and had only had one conversation with him, hut on that occasion he was impressed with the wide knowledge of the deceased gentleman regarding the early history of Taranaki and the Maori wars. In this connection he would like to remark that he was not aware if there was a society such as the Taranaki Early Settlers' Asociation. If not, it was a great pity that the records of sucli men as the late Mr. Standish and others should not be preserved in concrete form. Otherwise it was only on an occasion such as that that the general public had the opportunity of learning what these men had done for the country and district. It was only fitting tiiat the memory of men with records such as that of Mr. Standish should not be allowed to pass away.
