The following has reached London from Captain McDonald, an Australian officer: "I am in Constantinople with other prisoners of war. We have received great kindness from the Turkish officers and have received a.n advance of pay lrom the commandant, l)jead liey. ' 1 TROOPERS TAKE COMMAND. •Sydney, June IS. Captain Bean writes: "One of the most remarkable qualities of the Australian and New Zealand troops during the first three days was that many men were living in the trenches a qtiar- 1 ter of a mile away from the nearest officer, and taking commands from »om 1 corporal or sergeant, who rose to the occasion and took control with complete , confidence. Many men in the trenches during these critical days never saw an officer, as there were not enough to go round. The subordinate commanders did not hesitate to take control. with wonderful capacity."
