Alan Maxwell, formerly of New Plymouth, and ex-light weight champion boxer of New Zealand, has added to his pugilistic record the privilege of her.vg the undefeated light weight champion cf E-'ypt. Maxwell left New Zealand with the First Expeditionary Force, and In u letter to a friend at ITawera he relates successes in . boxing matches amongst the troops in Egypt before go in- to the Dardanelles. Maxwell foiiglu Kid James (Oth Manchester Regiment, and a prominent boxer), and knocked out James in the third round. He also had a match with Jones (ex-North of England Champion), whom he defeated in the seventh round. Maxwell then challenged any man ir- Egypt of 10 stone or under, but left for the Dardanelles undefeated.
