Vi lias been giving erratic displays over the small sticks, and lias evidently grown cunning, running off at every opportunity. The Porirua (enjn for the Hnwke's I'-ay meeting includes Xaupata, Aratialia and Scrutineer. The trio should run well at the fixture.
Hvme.ttius and Wild Lupin liave recent form to recommend them in tile Heretaunga Handicap at Hastings. Beldame is being schooled oyer fences, and the others are. a very ordinary lot.
Morning is jumping in great style, and apparently relishes the big fences, an item worth remembering when tie Wellington Steeple or Crand National roll along. The meeting between Doon and Ihiatangata in the lla.-k Hurdles at Hast, iugs should settle a. lot of arguments. At the weights, Doon would only hare to run u]) to Wanganui form to take a power of beating. Tatterlcy was much too jolly to liave i chance at EUerslie. but another month will see the sprinters doing their best to keep the crack' in sight. Anyone who tries to pick the Winter Hack Handicap at Hastings deserves to get an Tron Cross. A Ices (if re-
served) and Plunder may be the elect of the -public, but the race looks very open.
Amongst the winners at the Croat Xorthoru meeting, flolden Olow, with fourteen summer* gone, was tile veteran, but lie had not much on Dogger .Bank, who won in stylo that suggests that lie did not know that he was rising eleven. There have onlv been three double winners of the llawke's Bay Steeple, phase since 1ST!). These were Clarence, Mora™ and Xadador. The Ashhttrst Racing Club, which recently got its permit back, is building ii]i strongly again, and the course, stands, lawns, etc., are to be put in order right away. 'Possibly a mooting will be held on the little course overhanging the Manawatu River at the end of the year.
~ The Napier Park Racing Club's meeting, which will take place next week, will see the patriotic fund get another lift. The committee has decided to donate all per tent, of the profits to the fund for wounded Hawke's Bay soldiers. The racing clubs of the Dominion have responded splendidly to all calls, but we do not hear so much from the kill-joy crowd. Those who hacked Tmmensitv in the Campbell Hurdles at Ellorslio' did not get a run for their money, the nag breaking a blood-vessel after doing her porliminary. Although withdrawn, she was technically a starter, and the sum of .£377 on her was lost without a doubt. Yet everybody will tell you that for a bet to be fair you must have a chance to win and also a chance to lose. The latter comes the way of punters mostly. Mr. James Barnes, the popular president of the Xew South Wales Trotting Club, set the kill-sports a good example by giving CiflO to the Belgian Pnnd out of his own " kick." The Ashburton Trotting Club's winter meeting was a great suevess. the sport being first rate and the attendance good. The starters averaged nineteen per lieat. J Trotting is more popular than the gallops down south. Mr. Charles Hudson's American stallion boreno Todd has reached Duncdin, after a hum- joiiniov bv train and steamer. Til ali, the horse has travelled 21X10 miles by rail, and about 12.000 miles by boat. Still, he was landed in good con dition, and at once, showed himself to be a v evy active horse. Aril Cairn has said farewell to tin. racing track and will in future take up stud duties. They are very strict down south on drivers who anticipate the starting-bell, and a biaec were mulcted in a tenner apiece for that olicncc at the Ashburton meeting. The llawke's Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting will be concluded at Hastings to-morrow.
