At the Hilton Court before Mr. lAeheson, S.M., Captain John Robert Henderson ims •barged with stealing on Fdbruary 18, Md 3, £2O, a portion of a i sum of £3l l"2s id paid to him on behalf i of the 14th South Otago Kegiment by |A. .15. Stewart. Jn, connection with this charge there was also taken a charge of, [ on February 18, 1(113, making a false I entry, "to refund range £37 12a 4d," in a book belonging to or in possession of accused's employers. The case for the prosecution was that £97 12s 4d was paid over to the accused by Colonel Stewart, that sum belonging to the regiment. (Before paying the cheque into the bank, the accused drew £2O in cash, the amount actually credited being £37 12s 4d. In accounting for this the accused made an entry in the regimental book, "rafund range £37 12s 4d." Accused reserved his defence and was committed for trial on both charges. The next charge was that on .February 1, MM3, at Milton, accused did steal £6 received from John Mac Gibbon Shanks for ammunition sold by him to Shanks, j the property of the New Zealand Cor vernmcnt. Evidence was giren for the prosecution that accused had no authority to sell ammunition. Owen MoGuggan, De-fence storekeeper, said he was the receiver of money for ammunition. Accused had not paid him. Accused was committed for trial. The next charge was that on February 20, 1012, accused stole £2 10s received from David Moves for ammunition sold by him to .Moves, the property of the New Zealand Government. Accused was committed for trial. Accused was also charged with stealing £2 Bs, a portion of li sum paid to liim on behalf of the Government for-the ' payment of a party of the 14th Rcgi--1 ment. The case for the prosecution was ) that tbe money should have gone to pay ! wages of the reargnard at Sutton camp in April, 1013, and that although the men had signed the pay-roll beforehand tliey had not been paid. Accused was 1 committed for trial. Two other charges were struck out. i Accused was admitted to bail in one J surety of £2OO and his own recognisance of £2OO on the charge of stealing j £2O, and his own recognisance of £IOO j on the other charges.
