STRATFORD STREETS.
LIGHTS OUT AT 1 AM. The question of street lighting evoked considerable discussion at the meeting of tho Stratford Borough Council Jast night. The matter was brought forward by a clause in the Lighting Committee's report, which stated that the present contract with the Electrical Supply Company for street lighting expires on 30th inst., and recommended that an arrangement be made with the company to pay: for street lighting in future by meter reading, and that the lamps be lit only from sunset till 1 a.m. Or. Lawson asked if the committee had compared tho cost of light bv meter with the present method of paying. Cr. Young said that by keeping the street lights going until 1 a.m. instead of all night as at present it should not cost more than £2 5s per light, as compared with £3 Ms at present. Cr. Hunter asked if the street lights were extinguished at 1 a.m. as proposed, would the private houses be in darkness after that hour?
Cr. Hunter submitted that it was a retrograde step. It induced robbery, fires, etc., and he thought it would look as if Stratford was going back instead of going ahead. His Worship, in reply to a councillor, said the Council would not have to }>ay for the meter that would be installed to register the current consumed.
Cr. Thompson said the only people who would be inconvenienced by the proposal would be doctors, and possibly some few other people who ought to be at home.
The motion was carried, an amendment by Cr. Lawson to pay by meter and keep the streets lighted all night being lost.
