WAITARA HARBOR BOARD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Waitara Harbor Board was held on Friday evening. Present: Messrs J. Hine (chairman), 11. Spurdle. C. Blanchard, H. K. Vaughan, and H. McKenzie. The chairman moved that a vote of sympathy be sent to Mr. Halcombe in connection with his sad bereavement.
Mr Chadwick wrote accepting the rental fixed on his lease.
The Marine Department wrote in connection with the shoal patch off the Waitara roadstead, stating that Captain Bollard, of the ss. Hinemoa, hid been unable to locate the spot. It was decided to again communicate with the Marine Department, expressing the hope that Captain Bollard on his next visit would again, make a further effort to locate the shoal patch. The matter of securing a crane for the wharf was held over until next meeting.
The chairman reported his interview with Mr. Masscy on his recent visit to Waitara in connection with the foreshore. The Premier promised to" attend to the matter during the next session. It was resolved that the board's solicitor be instructed to draft a Bill repelling the restrictions in respect to the river frontage tinder the board's control. The report of the valuation committee was then read and accepted. Accounts amounting to £B2 13s 2d were passed for payment.
At a meeting to deal with matters in connection with the ceremony of the unveiling of the obelisk in the old soldiers' cemetery, it was decided that the ceremony should take place on Thursday, June 24, at 2 p.m. Messrs Bcckbessinger, Johns, Arms, Brabant, and .Toll were appointed a committee to carry out the arrangements. The Senior Cadets are to entertain the Veterans .it luncheon at the Clifton Hall. The public will also be invited. It was ulso decided that there he a procession headed by the Waitara Municipal Brass Band, Veterans, Territorials, Reservists, and Mounted Rifles to march around the town en route to the cemetery. At a special meeting of the. Waitara Borough Council, the town clerk (Mr. C. H. Tate) handed in his resignation, having decided to volunteer for service with the New Zealand -Expeditionary Force. The members expressed their regret at losing him, but congratulated him on the step he had t alt en. It was decided to call for applications to fill the vacancy. "It was also decided that the position -should be kept open for Mr. Tate. The council went into the matter of a drainage scheme. After a great deal of discussion, it wns decided that the department be asked to sanction Mr. Dowsett's scheme to drain through the septic tanks. It was also decided to ask the Health Department if they could recommend a better schem'
During the Premier's visit to Waitara his Worship the Mayor waited on Hr. Massey with reference to a more up-to-date post'office, pointing out that the present building was far too small, and the accommodation was inadequate io the needs of the growth of the town. The P«me Minister thought the claim was a reasonable one. The business of the post and telegraph office had largely increased, and he would place the matter before the Postniaster-Oner.U and ask him to make provisions on the Estimates.
The deputation also drew the Prime Minister's attention to the 'inconvenient and dangerous location of the railway engine shed and the constant travelling across the road, saying there was no necessity to place "the builoing there considering there were more convenient sites available. The Prime Minist'r promised to bring the matter before the Minister of Railways.
At a smoke concert held in the Clifton Hall on Saturday evening, Messrs B. Berntsen, E. Jury, A. Reed, and (I. Kaipo were entertained by their friends prior to their departure for Trenthain. The chair was occupied by his Worship the Mayor, who, during tlie evening, handnd each of the young men a shaving outfit, and said it would be useful when in the trenches, and would remind them of their friends in Waitara. Each of the recipients suitably replied. A long toast list w'as gone through, and the function concluded with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne."
