STRATFORD COUNTY'S PROPOSALS. I COMMISSION OF INQUIRY. At tho Stratford Courthouse yesterday, Mr. W. S. Short, Assistant UnderSecretary of Public Works, opened an .inquiry into the application of the Stratford County for penni-sion to (reel. ■a toll-gate near Waipuku bridge, and to consider objections thereto l.v other local bodies. The chief question' was the upkeep of the main road and how it was to be mot, the Stratford Borough Council objecting to a toll, while all the other bodies concerned preferred a toll to paying a proportion of the expense of upkeep, which would be, on the baisis of a tally recently taken— Stratford County 21 per cent* Taranaki •County 31 per cent., Stratford Borough 17, Now Plymouth Borough 10, Hawera County fl, Elt'.iam County 4, Clifton County 3.

Attar .1 number of witnesses had been heard the inquiry was adjourned till 2 p.m. to-day.
