FIRE BRIGADE BALL.

.J.v V .SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. There was a very large attendance at the New Plymouth Fire Brigade's 33rd annual ball, which was held at the Coronation Hall last night. The programme opened at an early hour with dancing and competitions for tin; children, which the little ones and eir parents thoroughly enjoyed. The scene was a strikingly pretty one, the hall being beautifully decorated with bunting and colored drapings, while suspended from the centre of the ceiling was a huge umbrella decorated and illuminated in the national colors. The orchestra was arranged on a dais in the centre of the hall, which proved'a big advantage to the dancers and also improved the general appearance of the hall. The music for the children's dances was provided by Misses Doris George and F. Bedford. The awards for the fancy dresses wero as follow:

Best Ally—Kate Cummins; Belffian. Best 'Fancy Dress (girl)— Violet Doughty; Early Victorian. Best Fancy Dress (boy)— Jack Bennett; Jack in the Box. 'Most Original (girl)—lvy Doughty; duck.

Most Original (hoy)—Roycie Ward; golliwog. , 'Best Poster (boy or girl)—Gwen Bullot; Three Castles Cigarettes. Best Small Boy's Fancy Dress —Treon Hoskins; John Bull. Best Small Girl—'"Marjorio Hoskins; sunflower.

Quaintest Fancy Dress (boy)— Herbert Sellings. Quaintest Girl's —Belle Ford; Christmas cracker.

Special prizes were given by the judges, Mesdamos Blackley, W. Weston urn! Colling, to Phyllis Harvey (Powder Pulf), Lorna Sullivan (Belle of New .York), Bell Roebuck (Britannia), Dolly Richards (butterfly), Evelyn Way (Poster), Kitty ClaTke (goblin), Mona ThomBon (little Belgian).

Subsequently the proceedings took the form of a fancy-dress ball, at which thero was a very large gathering. The music was supplied by Mrs. George's orchestra.

The march was licaded by a band of fairies and gnomes, the fairy queen being Phvllis (Ford, while her aides were Sybil Courtney, lola Inch, Graco Way, Hazel Ford and Norma Beale. The gnomes were Harold Reed, Loen Oliver, Clarence Jackson, Wilfred Groombridge.
