WORK AT ARMS FACTORY. EFFECT ON METAL WORKERS. Sydney, June 3. Arrangements for completing work in double shifts at the small arms factory are one of the chief factors for causing unemployment among the Broken Hill and Port Pirie smelters, and shortness of freight to carry lead to Vladivostock, whence it is shipped to the Russian arsenals, the Russian army being a very large consumer of Barrier lead. MEAT SHORTAGE. Melbourne, June 3. In the Assembly, Mr. Hagelthorn, dealing with the meat shortage, announced that the exporters had decided to make available all the meat deemed to be surplus, at prices slightly higher than those arranged for originally with the Government. The Government is cabling these prices to the Imperial Government, and also representing its view as to the shortage. In Victoria it is considered that the export season lias practically terminated, and the meat at present held in Victoria, is primarily needed for local consumption. Exporters agreed to supply locally first quality beef at a maximum of (id, mutton S'/jd, lamb o%d. It was pointed out that this was 16s above the Imperial Government's arrangement.
