DISTRICT NEWS.
TARIKI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) An Interesting social function took place on the Rugby Road on the 25th ult., wlien over fifty settlers and residents in the locality gathered at the residence of Mr. (J. T. Hughes to farewell that gentleman and his family prior to their leaving the district. A presentation, which took the form of two easy chairs, was made by Mr. H. Rumball, who, in the course of his speech,, remarked that Mr. Hughes was a settler whose leaving the locality wiis greatly regretted by all. During the eight years he had been farming on the Rugby Road he had proved himself to be not only a thoroughly up-to-date farmer, from whom they had learnt many things, but also one who was always ready to help his neighbors in every f way in his power. He felt he was only voicing the sentiments of those present wlien he said that they one and all deeply felt Mr. Hughes' departure, and wishod "him every success in his new home at Huirangi. (Applause.) Mr. Hughes, in thanking the settlers for their kind and useful present, said that he could assure them lie regretted leaving his friends and neighbors on the Rugby Road very much. He had a high opinion of the people living on it. Though very sorry to leave, fie was consoled by the thought that he was not going further away than Huirangi, where lie hoped they would "look liim up," and he could assure them they could always rely on getting a 'hearty welcome. (Applause.) A very pleasant evening was spent with songs, cards, and dancing, and was concluded with a hearty rendering of "Auld Lang Syne."
