The ollicers of the various Government departments located in New Plymouth met last night at the Courthouse to take concerted action in regard to >he fund to be created by the whole of tin? public service for the relief of distress consequent on casualties to New Zealamlers on active service at the front. The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mi. Billiard), who presided over a large ajul representative meeting of officers, stated that while all of them could 'not take up active duty as soldiers, all could assist in encouraging the brave men who are. already at the front, and the thousands more who are going, by affording them the assurance that in the event of misfortune overtaking them those who are left behind would at least do their part in providing for those who may be wounded, and for the dependents of the heroes who may fall in the defenco of the Empire. It was decided that the various departments should make voluntary eon- ! tributions each month, contributing as a whole to the common fund as set out in tho circular memorandum received from the Permanent Heads in Wellington and authorised by the executive of the Public Service Association.
