THE NATIONAL FUND. Wellington, May 27. At a committee sitting of the conference of mayors and patriotic committee officials it was resolved that thu conference was agreed that the different patriotic eoiiimittes should federate, and that the delegatus ask their committees about the advisability of establishing a national scheme. A committee was appointed to bring down regulations for consideration at the next conference, and it was also resolved that the regulations dealing with the examination of invalided soldiers returning to the Dominion bo rigidly enforced. Several principles for controlling the funds were adopted, and it was finally resolved that "the conference urge upon the Government the necessity ■of amending the. Defence Act to provide more liberally for the soldiers and their dependents. MEN IN MALTA HOSPITAL. Wellington, May 27. The Hon Jas. Allen has cabled to Malta and Egypt asking the authorities there to cable at once details regarding the Wounded New Zealanders in both places. He has been advised that live wounded oflieers and 2!Hi wounded Netv Zealanders are. ill the italta Hospital. He has also issued a statement giving a definition of the expressions used in the casualty lists relating to slight, serious, and dangerous wounds. CASE OK RETURNED TROOPER. Christchureh, May 27.
At ii meeting of tins Hospital Board several members spoke in indignant tones of tlie treatment of a returned trooper, who, it was stated, came back from Egypt suffering from tuberculosis. He wandered about the streets for some time, and finally found his way to the board's tuberculosis dispensary, where :t was discovered for the first time that he was simply in a state of collapse. One member .said he was astonishe'd to learn that the Defence authorities did not provide for the man, and the local bmlies also must be held responsible for the treatment of returned troopers. The matter was an absolute disgrace. It was decided to ask the public: health committee to investigate and take action.
FOR THE FRONT. TAJIAXAKI MEN' LEAVE TO-DAY. A large number of men are leaving the Tai'anaki district to-day for the Trentliam training camp. (Quotas' are entraining from Inglewood, Stratford, Eltham and llawera, and a. few from other places. None, however, are going from New Plymouth. There will be, large gatherings at the. various stations along the line to bid farewell to the brave lads who are leaving to uphold the honoi of tie Empire.
