JUDGMENT SUMMONSES.
A NEW DEPARTURE MADE. By Telegraph.— Association. Auckland, Last Night. Of a large number of applications for orders under judgment summonses which came before Mr. Kettle, S.M., to-day only ilirce or four were successful. .In one of these cases tlie debtor acknowledged (!1111, he drank, and ill the others the debtors did not appear. The Magistrate slated that all Magistrates had considered the; matter, and had decided that (he judgment summons system was being abv.scd. Where debtors could shoiv that they did not have means or were honestly trying to .pay, no order would be 'made, while neither would adjournments be granted, and the fear of imprisonment kept hanging over the heads of debtors. Solicitors should exhaust all methods open to them under an ordinary judgment before seeking an order. One solicitor protested that' this system would result in the starving of many people owing to the stoppage of credit, but the Magistrate indicated that lie j did not fear this result.
