THE TAUMARUNUI SEAT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, May 25. The Hon. W. F. Massey has received correspondence from Mr. W. T. Jennings and the Te Ivuiti Liberal and Labor League asking for the removal of Mr. Schramm from the position of returning officer for Taumarunui. He stated that, the suggestion is utterly unreasonable, and added that in order that no interested party might have cause for complaint had arranged for an officer from the head office of the Electoral Department to go to Taumarunui until the byelection is over and work with the electoral officer. A CASE LIKE SUICIDE. By Telegraph.—Prca3 Association. 'Dunedin, Last Night. A man named John George Smyth died at the hospital this afternoon under conditions pointing to suicide. Deceased, who was about 44 years of age, had been living apart from his wife and family of several children for some time. About 3.45 p.m. ho came downstairs in the house at which he stayed and in his hand was a bottle which contained ( poison. His landlady tried to stop him frqm drinking the contents, but failed, and she sent for the police. Smyth was taken to the hospital, but died soon after admission.
