FALSE TRETENCES. By Telegraph—Press Association, Wanganui, May 25. Leslie Ellis was sentenced to mrec months' imprisonment in the Magistrate's Court to-day for obtaining £7 15s by false pretences. AN INDECENT BOOK, Napier, May 2-1-. At the 'Magistrate's Court to-days Alfred Charles Howe, bookseller, was fined £2 for selling a copy of tile book "The Winning Post Funny Stories mid Jokes No. 5." Mr. McCarthy, a.M„ characterised the publication as a dreary waste of suggestive filth. He said a more correct title for it would be ''Scraps from the Literary Muck Heap." ■ He inflicted a light penalty, as defendant did not know the book was indecent.
SUICIDE AT CITRISTCIIUUCH. Christchurch, Last Might. The. body of N- G. Keane was found hanging to it ladder in a back room of Xicnoll's auction rooms this morning. Deceased was about 44 years of age, and was a married man with three children. Until January last he was a partner in the firm of P. S. Nicholls and Co., furniture auctioneers, for about three years. Upon the. dissolution of of flic partnership, he was retained as auctioneer until about a month ago, when he ceased his connection. Ho ; liad formerly had a business as a tobacconist in Invercargill, where he was very well known, and was a Southland representative wicket-keeper, and he was in the last Christchurch senior team. Keane suirercd from mental depression as a result of financial and business difficulties. In a pocket was found a telegram threatening to have him arrested if money was not paid forthwith. At an inquest held to-night a verdict of suicide while in unsound mind was returned.
