Total £1229 6 3 < THE STREET COLLECTION'. < The New Plymouth branch of the St. John Ambulance Association made their big effort on Saturday, and the very satisfactory sum of £2lO was secured, with several further boxes yet to come in. From an early hour on Saturday a numerous band of ladies were to be seen busily engaged in various parts of the town soliciting tlio assistance of every passer-by, in fact one could go very few steps without meeting one of th" young ladies with the symbolical red cross upon her arm. The heavy rain which fell at intervals in no way deterred them, and they would not be denied, as indicated by the result. Unfortunately the rain of the day took the form of a tropical downpour in the evening, and the Citizens' Band, which had offered their services in aid of the cause, wa» unable to carry out this part of thu programme. The rain also kept many > people indoors, and the collection was therefore abandoned at a much earlier hour than waß originally intended. Under these circumstances, the result achieved was the more meritorious. The local branch of the St. John Ambulance Association and those who assisted with the collection are to be congratulated on the success which attended the collection. The. lady collectors were:—Mesdames Wilson (Mayoress), E. Dockrill, F. Messenger, Austin, Duff, Johnston, and Waugh; Misses (i. Bewley, Houston, Devcnish, C. Mackay, Roy, E. Grant, J.
