The Daily News. SATURDAY, MAY 22, 1915. ITALY'S DECISION.

At last Italy has decided on her action and declared war, throwing in her lot with the Allies. It has taken a long time for her to arrive at the parting of the ways, hut now the die is east, and one more factor in the success of the Allies has appeared. On the outbreak of the war, Italy promptly cut the knot that had held her to the Triplice, and stood aloof from her former Allies, Germany and Austria. Since then desperate sfforts have been made by Germany and Austria to arrive at some arrangement that would satisfy Italy, but without result. These negotiations gave Italy the chance of rectifying her mistake in not denouncing', the Triple Alliance in August last and clearing Up her position, So as to give her complete, liberty of action. The interval has not been wasted, for Italy has been enabled to make the necessary preparations for war, and to allow the country time to work up a war spirit. Both those objects have been accomplished, and Ttaly enters into the lighting arena with a well-equipped army and navy, the latter containing several modern Dreadnoughts anda number of submarines. The warmhearted and impulsive Italians have manifested the greatest sympathy with the Allies, and especially with Britain, so that the rapid growth of the feeling in favor of war is quite comprehensible, flic. 'Government is backed up by the nation, and the support of Italy will he greatly appreciated by the Allies. There is every reason to assume that Italy has counted the cost, and will enter upon hostilities well prepared for the inevit-

able toll. At this juncture her support will be doubly welcome, being worth :i hundred times what little help America could give, and the triumph of the Allies will enable Italy to live by herself and not on the sufferance of others. Throughout the -British Empire there will arise a cry of "Well done, Italy!" She is risking much, but her prospects of gaining her " unredeemed" provinces are certainly bright. The net of Fate is surely enmeshing tile German tyrant closer in its folds.
