HIGH COMMISSIONER'S RETORT. Wellington, May 17. Following is the High Commissioner's cable under date May 13. Note: Quotations', unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot:
Mutton.—Fair demand continues and prices are firm, partly owing •to purchases for the Government of Australian and New Zealand. Canterbury and North Island fl 1-llid; ordinary quality ojd.
Lamb.—The market is weaker and slightly lower. Canterbury 7 13-lGd for best quality.
, r , / v Zealand beef not quoted. The Government has purchased lar"c quantities of best quality, and there Is only inferior quality for sale at market. Chilled, in good demand; hinds 8d fores Old. '
Buttor.-The market is firm at the advance. Danish, in fair demand, 154s to 15(is; New Zealand prices firm', 140s to 1445; Australian 134s to 13Ss; Siberian 132s to l.'!4s; Irish creameries 140s to 1425; Argentine 134s to 138s. Cheese.—The market is very firm Canadian white o(is to i)Ss, colored 04s to 00s. The New Zealand market is advancing steadily; white 03s to 05s colored 03s to !)4s. United States last season's make firmer, white and colored 00s to 02s.
Hemp.—The market is quiet and prices slightly weaker. New Zealand good fair grade £32 Is, fair ;a<> 10s fair current Manila £3!), May-July good fair £32, fair f.'K), fair current Manila £3B. The output from Manila for the week was 2ii,o<)l) bales.
Hops.—The market is linn on account of more confidence in the (iovorninont proposals concerning the licjnor Irallie Knglish KKIs to 7;ls. Californian !i;.s to o'/is.
Wheat.-.Market is rather unsettled owing to reports concerning favorable American crop prospects. Buyers are cautious. Canadian on passage 07s May-June (its; American July-Augint 5").5; Argentine on passage (ills.'.
Oats.—The market is quiet and prices slightly weaker. Argentine on spot l, Ss May-June 20s. ''
Woo!.—The market is firm with improved demand and the decline has suddenly slopped. Sclieelile.—Quotations for scheelite range from 32s to 33s per unit.
