THE DOMINION'S PART. FIXES! THING IN HISTORY. Wellington, Last Night. .Speaking at tile Orphans' Club on Saturday -tile Hon. A. L. Herdnian made some interesting references to the war. He remarked that it wa.j inspiring to find so many of the young men in a small country like New Zealand oll'ering bodies, ihrains, and wealth lor the service of the King. The rate of recruiting was satisfactory at present, but greater demands would be made in montlLs to come. He was sure when the call came there would be no holding back on the part of the young men. Some were too old to go to the front. He himself was only a private in the National Reserve, but if opportunity oll'ered there were few of them that would not go. It was the finest thing in the history of New Zealand that 15,000 or l(i,000 young men bad gone to fight the Empire's battles. Our very existence was at stake and our liberty in danger. Our privileges were in danger of being taken away, and our every notion of civilisation must perhaps be reconstructed. Unless we fought what our statesmen and soldiers had .suffered to obtain would disappear into tile air before a relentless enemy that employed poisonous gases. Mr. Herdman said all classes were united in the determination to bring the war to a succe.-isful issue in the cause ol right and honor. THE ANAESTHETIC FUND, Wellington, May 15. The Hon. Dr. Collins, New Zealand representative of the Anaesthetic Fund Committee, has forwarded the sum of £3OO as a first contribution, lie has received the following eab!e from the Hon. lluia Onslow, of the English committee: "A thousand thanks. Please say| part of the contribution is going to the" Malta hospital for the New Zealanders wounded in the Dardanelles." .Dr. Collins states that more money is urgently reipih'cd.
RECRUITING- AT HAWERA. Ilawcra, 'May 15. A large and enthusiastic patriotic demonstration in connection with the recruiting movement was held in the Opera House on Friday evening. Addresses stressing the need for more men were given >by Dr. McNab, M.P., and Mr. W. A. Veitch, M.P. Notwithstanding heavy recruiting during the week, over 25 registered in the evening. AX UNPLEASANT INCIDENT. Gore, May 15. At a recruiting meeting last evening, when Mr. H. D. Bedford, of Dunedin, was near the close of a stirring speech appealing for recruits, an unpleasant incident occurred. A well-known local solicitor, Mr. W. F. Inder, said he objected to .Salvation Army methods, and mad" reference to Dunedin speakers not being needed to teach Gore patriotism. The interjector's appeal to t, ic crowd was angrily resented, and the police escorted the intcrjeetor outside, numbers following and becoming excited. Later a crowd assembled outside the post office, where Inder was. The crowd demanded an apology, which was made. Inder said he would apologise, if the crowd thought "le had insulted Air. Bedford or the crowd. The latter, still angry, escorted Inder along the street to a hotel, and after some time the crowd dispersed.
