IN AID OF THE BELGIANS.
ENTERTAINMENT AT ST. MAKY'S HALL. A most successful entertainment was iriven on Friday night at St. Mary's Hall, as the result of which it is expected that the fund for the relief of the Belgians will benefit by over £2O. 'Miss C. Leatluun, who 'hail charge of the arrangements, deserves great praise for the excellence of the .programme, and thanks are due to all the. performers for their pleasing contributions. The'first part consisted of a very enjoyable concert, which was opened by a jiiancforte solo by Miss Beryl Hirst, and played in her usual brilliant manner. Mr. TTil'l-lohnson's rendering of "The Veteran's Song" was well received, and for an encore he gave ''Son of Mine." Mr. C. Webster's vocal item was also encored. Miss Mildred Thomson sang with much sweetness "May Day," 'her encore being "My Task." Mr.' Hutton contributed three songs, his light baritone being heard to advantage. Mr. Vinson's very clever performance of "The One-man Band" was greatly appreciated. A humorous duet, ''Jim," by Miss B. Hirst and 0. f.eatham, wa* followed by a ditty, "Matilda," by Misses C. and K. Lcathain, B. Hirst ami Mr. Alan Matthews. Miss C. iLcathain's brilliant rendering of "Valse C'harmeuse," with its imperative encore, brought the first part of the programme to a close.
Then fallowed two farces, one from "Martin Chuzzlowit," "A Division Between Friends" and the other ''Mrs. Snaghy's (luests," and all those who took part deserve the greatest of praise, considering the shortness of time they had to master their .different parts. The performers in "At Division Between Friends" were: Miss C. Leatham, "Sairey ("Sump"; Miss M. Hopkins, "Betsy Preg"; and Mr. T. Simpson, "Mr. Swecdlepipea." Those in "Mrs. Snagsby's ducats" were: Miss W. Webster, ''Mrs. Snagsby"; -Mr. T. Simpson, "Mr. Snagsby"; Miss B. Hirst. "Mrs. Chadbaml"; Mr. nill-John-son, "Rev. Chadband"; Miss K. T.oatliam, ''(iuster." The committee wish to thank Messrs Hill-Johnson, JTiitton and T. Simpson for .their kind assistance in connection with tne stage work, »nd Mr. Hoffmann lor lending thn piano; also the local papers for free advertisements.
