' PUKEARUnE. DEPUTATION TO CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL. ' WIIITECLIFF'S TUNNEL TO BE DONE Ul'. A strong deputation from the Pukearuhe district, comprising Messrs A. it. Davis, W. .J. Freeth. \V. J. Bowman, 11. and P. Wells, and W. McKenzie waited on the Clifton County Council at ics meeting at Waitara yesterday in connection with several matters of importance to settlers in that district. A deputation waited on the Council first in connection with the, condition of the WhiteclifT Tunnel.
Mr. A. R. Davis, on behalf of the deputation, suggested that a further cut be made in the bank. The grade at present was about one in seven. It required also more metal on the road. The deputation proposed that about £SO be spent on the work. The improvement of the road would save stock a day's drive. The chairman thought tlic work could be done for much less than £SO. He suggested that the, corner fce cut olt. The deputation pointod out that that would make the grade too steep on the slippery papa surface. The surface was always wet through the spring thai existed in the tunnel.
