Tlie Hon. 0. Samuel and Mrs. Samuel ■wort; passengers by the mail train yesterday morning to Wellington. A London cablegram states that the Rev. Dr. Clifford has resigned the pastorate of tile Westbourne Park liaptist Chapel. Private Dudley Cameron, of Stratford, the well-known footballer, was amongst the Xew Zealand troops who were invalided home from Egypt, and reaehed Wellington on Wednesday. Private Cameron arrived home last night. The death has occurred at riallarat of an old Crimean soldier, William McDonnell. He was S5, ami belonged to the famous 50th Regiment, lie held British and Turkish medals with bars for Inkerman and Rebastopol. lie also serve;! in New Zealand against the Maoris. '
The Times of Maivh 2(5 reported that Mr. Alfred Brown, a naval veteran, who bad fought in the Xew Zealand War of 1845, as well as in the Crimean War, had died at Clillingham, Kent, in his 01st year. As a bo.v. Brown was in the service of lieutenant White, father of Sir Ceorge White, the defender of Ladvflmith, who bad bis oflieial residenre in an old French frigate lying in the Medway.
Mrs. Sophia Louisa Kemp, a very old resident of the Hay of Islands, died at lCeri Keri recently, at the age of S,"> years. She was a daughter of one of the early missionaries at the Bay of Is. lands, the Rev. Richard Davis, who arrived there as far back as 1524. Deceased was married to the late James Kemp, and is survived by four sons and three daughters. A sister of Mrs. Kemp married Mr. E. M. Williams, and deceased therefore was an aunt of Mr. Xorman Williams, manager at Auckland of the National Insurance Company.
Mr. Harold Williams, whose aceount of the battle of I'rasnysk appeared yesterday, is well known to many New 1 lymouth residents, for be resided here some years ago, and was secretary of the local Prohibition League. Mr.j or rattier, Dr.. \\ illiams, for he holds the of PI.D., had a wonderful gift of acquiring languages, and on leaving New Plymouth he studied in Europe, taking his degree at one of the. European verities. He has resided in Russia for some years, and has been occupied in making a scientific, study of the many dialects spoken in that country He has written some books on Russia and the Russian people. He is a son of the Williams, editor of the oflieial organ of the Methodist Church of New Zealand.
