As the investigation into accounts has not yet been completed, the eliargC of embezzlement against Barclay Hector, registrar of the New Zealand University, has been further adjourned foi one week. Bail was renewed. CONTROL OF A LIFT. Auckland May t. A sequel to the lift accident which caused the death of Margery Dcwcs on March 26 occurred to-day, when the Mational Bank of New Zealand, as owners of the Hobson Buildings, were charged that they left the lift in charge of a 'person under eighteen years of age, —namely, a boy sixteen years and ten months old. Defendants nlrniHed guilty. The Magistrate expressed the opinion that, the bank was in an unfortunate position. He thought Messrs. Turnbull and Jones, the firm of contractors for maintaining the lift, were more responsible. It was explained they could not be brought within the Act. The Magistrate imposed the minimum fine of £5 and costs, as the "bank knew" nothing of the matter, except so-fiii as the Act made them as owners technically responsible.
