Members of the legal profession in Eltham assembled at the Coronation Hotel on Thursday evening to bid farewell to Mr. J. MeVeagh, who has left tor Auckland. Mr. T. B. Crump presided and in presenting Mr. McVcagh with a suitably inscribed cigarette case and holder, referred to the departing gentleman's excellent qualities. He felt sure that only only would the legal profession regret Mr. MeVcagh's departure, but all the residents of Eltham. These remarks were endorsed by Mr. Gow, Mr. Weir, and others present, and an enjoyable evening was spent.

Bretherton, of the Public Trust Office, Dunedin—is wounded and a prisoner in Germany. There is irony in the fact that his' brother-in-law is Count Gebliard Bluchcr von Wablstadt, eldest son and heir of Prince Bluc'ier, who married Miss Evelyn StapletonBrethertop, eldest sister of the wounded prisoner of war. Mr. A. C. Bretherton is son-in-law of Mr .J. Liddell Kelly, of Devonport. The new Mayor of Auckland, Mr. J. U. Gunson, lias many of the characteristics of liis predecessor, Mr. C. J. l'arr. Both are comparatively young men, and in their respective capacities as port chairman and Mayor have launched out on radical lines in connection with the services they have controlled. Mr. Gunson is 37 years of age, and is head of tin- firm of J. 11, Gunson and Co., seed end produce merchants. lie has been prominent in public life in Auckland since 11)10. when he was president of the Chamber of Commerce. He has been-chairman of the Auckland Harbor Board for four years, and under his 'planning the city has launched out upon a comprehensive scheme of land reclamation, which has already proved a great financial asset.
