THE HIGH SCHOOL.
BOARD MEET IN COMMITTEE. A special meeting of the New Plymouth High School Board was hold last night to discuss school matters with Mr. H. J. Okey, M.P. There were present: Messrs E. Dockrill (chairman), A. MeHardv, E. P. Webster, J). Hutchen, and W. AV. E«'ing. An apology for absence was received from Mr. M. Fraser. The chairman said that Mr. Okey had had an interview with the Minister for Education on mntters concerning the Board, and it was a question 'whether it would be advisable to hear Mr. Okey in committee or allow the press to remain. Personally he thought the meeting should be held in committee. Mr. Okey said that as far as he was concerned he had nothing to say which might not be made public. The position was that the Minister would write to the Board himself, and he (Mr. Okey) simply wanted to discuss High School matters generally with the Board. Mr. McHirdy agreed with the chairnan that it was better to hear Mr. Okey in committee and supply the press afterwards with what information they considered desirable to be made public. Mr. Hutchen was in favor of allowing the press to remain. A good deal of the High School business had been made public, and he saw no reason why they should go into committee to hear Mr. Okey, especially ap Mr. Okey had said he had no objection to the publication of what he had to say. i Mr. Ewing agreed with Mr. Hutchen. After some discussion the Board Board decided to go into committee. The Board sat for about an hour, and reported that there was no information J to be made public. |
