CORRESPONDENCE.

PROPOSED FREEZING WORKS.

To tlic Editor. Sir, —The advantages to' be derived from the immediate establishment of these works are so undeniably great, and so easy to see, that their very self-evi-dence may happen to he the ruin of-the scheme. There appears to be a disposition on the part of many to delay making any personal move in the matter, "because the object is really such a good one that it is certain there will be plenty of applications for shares without me." It has been noticed that in the lists of applicants published the. names of many directors of coastal factories do not appear, and wore than one chairman is missing. Why should this be? Factory directors are generally assumed to be chosen out of the live and progressive men of the district. It is said that two reasons are given, by many ill the coastal district for declining to take up shares —(1) Tliey were induced to take up shares in the defunct Motor Transport Co. and lost their money ("once bitten, twice shy" you know); (i) they will consider, and wait and see how the tiling goes before deciding. Do these prudent, careful people ever realise that if the same spirit which prompts the first reason animated the hearts of General French and his army we would soon all be dead or ('Vmmiml! Try again, as the Tomi!iiil s do when checked. As for the second reason, the men of the roast are full of the sporting instinct, and it can hardly be, believed tliey are such poor sports that they will hold in their own dogs until their neighbors have winded tie 1 hare. The object is a good one—;:o»(. for the settler, good for the, district. good for everybody, good all round. Let 11 vthen have a Rood canvass, with good results, and the desired end will be within reach am, ete. ; UTOHA.
