Mr. C. IT. Poole, SI.P., of Auckland, is on a visit to New Plymouth. 'Sir. Duncan Cameron, of Moroa, dreytown, a well-known settler, died on Wednesday morning, at the age of eightyfour years. Lord Crawford, premier carl of Scotland, has enlisted as a private in the Royal Army Sledical Corps, says a message to the Sydney Sun. A Sydney cablegram states that Sir. J. D. Fitzgerald ha* been appointed to the vice-presidency of the Legislative Council.

Mrs. Kerr, relict of the late Hon. J. Kerr, died at Greymouth on Wednesday. The deceased lady was one of the oldest identities on the West Coast.

The death of Mr. George Henry Sehacht, of Oam'aru, a musician of great talent, who was well known in the earlier times throughout the Dominion, occurred recently at Christchureh. Mr. Harry Willis, who had been in a bad state of health for some time, died at his homestead, Kapuni, on Monday night. Deceased leaves a widow, but no family.

The latest news of De Wet is that he is suffering from a serious internal complaint, and is to undergo an operation, writes a former Wellington > resident in a letter from Johannesburg. The guerilla warrior had for some weeks been under medical treatment, and when the letter was posted from the Transvaal city;, De Wet was 'believed to he on the verge of a nervous breakdown. His eldest daughter had 'been operated upon for cancer, but the patient was not expected to survive.
