Nurse Holdsworth has boen appointed district nurse at Mokau. Mr..M. J. Macßcynolds, of Opunukc, leaves next week on a trip tp Australia. Mr. G. Van Heck has just undergone a serious operation in Wanganui. Advice has been received in Sydney that Doust, the international tennis player, has gone to the front. A Sydney cablegram announces tha deaths of Sir W. P. Manning and Mr. John Wheeler, a Past Grand Master of the Loyal Orange Institution. The Eltliam Argus understands that the Government intend re-nominating Mr. John Heslop to a seat on the Taranaki Land Board.
Mr. Booths who was quite recently appointed teller at the Bank of New South Wales, Waverley, has been transferred to New Plymouth.
Mr. Hnrathousei who Ims been acting for Mr. 1 Cecil Gray during Mr. Gray's absence from New Plymouth, has offered his services to the New Zealand Defence Office.
Mr. W. 31. lingers having resigned his seat on the Egmont National Park Board, on which he represented tha Stratford County, Cr. Anderson was at the council meeting yesterday appointed in his stead.
On tlte motion of the chairman, votes of sympathy and condolence with Anderson (on the loss of his mother) and Mr. E. Marfell (on the loss of Mb son) were passed at yesterday's meeting of the Stratford County Council. The death occurred on Sunday of Mr. Henry Miller, an old resident of Auckland. The deceased was born in Gippsland, Victoria, in 1840, and first arrived, in New Zealand in 18li.'!, residing in Otago. He saw service in the Maori War on the East Coast and in the Wanganui district. Mr. Miller was a gum merchant, and he possessed many friends. He left a widow and a grownup family.
Four sons of the late Mr. William Clyystall, the well-known Christchurch merchant, have been or are new engaged in the war (says the Press). Lieutenant J. T. Chrystall is serving with his regiment, the 18th Hussars, in France. Mr. H. M. Chrystall has just received a commission in the Royal Naval Division, and has sailed from England to the Dardanelles. Mr. G. B. Chrystall is a trooper/with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Dr. W. P. Chrystall recently succumbed to a chill-contracted while volunteering in the Malay Peninsula. A fifth son, Mr. A. J. holds a commission in the Territorial artillery in Dunedin. The West End Foreshore Improvement Society held a most enjoyable musical (■veiling at the Bungalow, Kawaroa Park, to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. -P.. Staples, who are leaving for' Cliristeluirch shortly. A capital vocal and instrumental programme was rendered by the Misses"V. and 1. Gilbert, Miss Hill, Messrs Farmer and Preece. A presentation of a handsome travelling rug was made to Mr. Staples, who has been a' member of the Society's committee. The president, Mr. A. E. Sykes, in making the presentation, laid especial stress on the splendid results achieved from thepublicity in the Press, which department. of the Society's activities had been their guest's especial care. There was iu> doubt that the record crowd on Easter Monday, he said, and to the increasing popularity of the park, were, largely due to the advertising, and the society's efforts had been stimulated thereby. Messrs V. 11. Deal and (i. J. Russell, members of the original committee, added their testimony, and Mr. Staples returned thanks. A capital supper wns served, the ladies dispensing the tea and coffee, and proceedings terminated with 'He's a Jolly Good Fellow," National Anthem, and "Auld Lang Syne."
