FIGHTING IN THE CARPATHIANS. TERRIFIC lIAND-TO-HAND WORK. Petrograd, April IS). Details of the battles of Telephoez and Zuelle state that the Russians began to advance on the night of April 14 and carried positions on the heights with the bayonet. The fighting was resumed with renewed intensity next day. The Austrians made repeated charges all day long in the vain attempt to retake the trenches. The Austrians rested and returned to the attack in the evening, tvhen there was terrific 1 hand-to-hand fighting along the whole line. The Austrians were everywhere repulsed or checked. At dawn on April 10 the Russians made a slight advance, hut the Austrians refused to accept defeat, and made charge after charge all day in an effort to recapturo Telephocz. Russian observers have not a doubt that the enemy was primed with and failed despite its superiority in numbers. A PREDICTION. Paris, April 19. Le Journal predicts that great events will occur on the eastern front in a fortnight. It will probably .be discovered that important objectives have been entirely removed from various places mentioned.
GERMAN AIRCRAFT AT WORK. Petrograd, April 19. German aeroplanes bombed Count Sosan sky's estate near Warsaw, where there was a large sugar refinery. The manager and two officials were killed, and several workmen wounded. RUMORED PEACE OVERTURES. 'London, April 19. Prince Trubetskoi, in aif article in the newspaper Ketch, discusses the rumors of Austro-Hungarian overtures for a separate peace. While disavowing precise information, lie deems the rumor* .plausible, owing to the great benefits a separate peace would confer upon , Austria. Should Italy and Houmania ♦join the Allies, Austria risks losing Trieste and Transylvania, which an immediate peaee may preserve. It is now clear that the alliance with Germany is wholly contradictory to the vital interests of Austria-Hungary.

A battalion surrenders en bloc. Fresh attacks in the directioi of Stryj were repulsed.
