A TRAWLER TORPEDOED. RESCUE OPERATIONS PREVENTED. A PICTURE FOR VON TIRPITZ. London, April 19. The Grimsby trawler Fermo reports that a submarine yesterday torpedoed the trawler Vanilla in the North 6ea, which was almost shattered and sank immediately. The Ferma, which was 300 yards away, attempted to pick up the stragglers in the water, but the submarine turned a gun on the rescuers and fired a torpedo, forcing the Fermo to seek safety in flight. Berne, April 19. In anticipation of Admiral von Tirpitz's birthday on the 24th, birthday cards are being sold bearing the admiral's portrait, and the words, "Tirpitz strafe England'' (Tirpitz punish Ensland).

The Turkish account of the sinking of the El 5 states that the vessel left Tenedos at midnight and dived after entering the Straits to avoid searchlights. She grounded at 6.30, but the conning tower was showing. 1 The first shell of the Turkish batteries struck the tower, killing the captain. The second wrecked the machinery. The crew left the vessel after three had been killed and seven wounded. The enemy's aeroplanes bombed the Vessel to prevent it falling into Turkish hands. The Turks rescued the crew. THE SUBMARINE MINE POLICY. GERMANY GOES THE LIMIT. Received April 20, 9.20 p.m. Copenhagen, April 20: The German fleet has laid a minfield in the vicinity of Alands, to prevent communication between Russia and. Sweden.. KEEPING THE COUNT. FISIIER FOLK MURDERED AT SEA. Received April 20, 0.20 p.m. London, April 20. The Admiralty states in connection with the torpedoing of the Vanilla, with the killing of fisher folk for no military purpose, that it will not escape attention. This is the second murder of the kind committed within a week. A careful record is being kept. DUTCH STEAMER SUNK. Received April 20, <>.25 p.m. London, April 20. The Butch vessel Olanda, coal laden from Seaham to Rotterdam, was mined and sunk in the North Sea. The crew was saved. THE KATWYCK CASE. KATSKR PLACATING HOLLAND. Received April 20, 0.20 p.m. Amsterdam, April 20. Germany, on her own initiative, informed Holland that it was possible that through accident a German submarine torpedoed the Katwyck. If inquiry proves this full compensation will hi wac'ft.
