DISTRICT NEWS.
KOTARE. (From Our Own Correspondent). The Kotaro Sports Club meeting -was held on Easter Monday in a paddock kindly lent by Mr. Kent. ■ The weather was all that could be desired. The attendance was a record for Kotare, people coming from as far as Uruti, Mokau, Tongaporutu and Waitaanga. A large quantity of vegetables, fowls, a sheep \ and a pig were "brought and sold for the \ Belgian fund, and realised £l2 17s 'fid. \ Along with other donations (I have been'' unable to ascertain the full amount) \ something over £2O was collected for? this deserving fund. Luncheon was ;' provided by the club in a marquee un- j dcr the able management of Mrs. Barlow, assisted by Messrs W. Blanchard, A. Mackie and J. Allen, who were kept busy during the day. The fields in most events were small, although some, to wit, stepping the chain, brought a large entry and caused no little interest. Everyone had his own opinion until the tape was run out, and, as in most events of this -kind, the efforts varied from %to V/ 4 chains. There was a fair entry for tn« old men's but as the track was rathe- —<rh for the old sports most of the-i < v.o down. In the evening the usual dance was held in Mr. Allen's residence, and th« f thanks of the club are due to Mr. and Mrs. Allen for the trouble they took to make arrangements. The music was supplied by Messrs W. Schmidt, J. Fraser and J. Allen. Mr. A. Scott was M.C. Several songs and recitations were given during the evening. Dancing was kept up to 5 a.m., when the usual "Auld Lang Syne" and three hearty cheers for Ur. and Mrs. Allen ended one of the most successful gatherings held in Kotare. Double-handed Sawing—Shewry and mate 1, Birkett and mate 2. Ladies' Nail-driving Competition— Mrs. Anderson 1. Mrs. Woodß 2. 440vds—S. J. Rattenbury 1, H. J. Mackie 2. . Maiden Chop, 12in block—B. McCoy. I, W. Stacy 2. Married Men's Race—E. Shaw 1, R. Scott 2. Ladies' Race—Mrs. Woods 1, Miss Johnston 2. Kotare Handicap Chop, 15in block—R. E. Shewry 1, H. Birkett 2. Tilting the Ring—R. Scott 1. Stepping the Chain—Jas. Smith 1, A. Krause 2. Horse Jumping—W. Rigg's Caralier (A. Scott) 1, A. Schwicters' Sadie (J. Bower) 2. Tug-of-War—Roadmen beat Settlers. The sheep-guessing competition was won by A. M. Bower, who guessed the ' correct weight, 1091bs. The secretarial work was in the able hands of Mr. A. Schwieters and the judges were Messrs R. *Scott and W. Schmidt. ;
