FINED FOR BETTING.

In the Police. Court, William Ryan, cliarged with betting on licensed premises, admitted the offence. He was described by the, police as a big bettor, whoso character was good, and who always met his liabilities. He had never been in the Court previously for a breach of the Act.
Counsel for defendant said, his elicit had been to the races and had a drink or two, otherwise the offence would never have occurred.
The Magistrate said he did not think under these circumstances it was prouor to impose a fine of £ 100, but diiTerentir.tion must be made between the small man the big man. Defendant would be fined £SO and costs. Jas. Lye, a contractor, who had been previously fined £2O for betting, was fined £4O and costs for a further offence of this nature.
Alfred Birch, for betting on Ellersiie Racecourse, was fined £3O and cosU George Powell, for betting on i.hc wharf, was fined £2O and costs.
