AUROA SPORTS CLUB.
(From our Own Correspondent.' )
The annual meeting of the Am'-ia 1 Sports Club was held on Easter Monday in Mr Bowman's paddock, under Ilia most favorable weather conditions and proved to be the most interesting and best financed meeting in the history of the club. The handicaps and wrestliog were most stubbornly contested, the winners only gaining the verdict by the. narrowest of margins in many cases. The boys' races under 12 years and 1(1 years were well-filled and brought out some verv likely colts. The inauguration of the Taranaki championships for boys under 17 years of age is undoubtedly the wisest step taken by any club to inspire enthusiasm into the manly sport. The ladies' raotf, both married and single, wore the means of introducing some very fast sprinters. The boirse events were keenly contested, and nave the judges (Messrs McCracken and Morrisseyj no easy task to separate them.
The concert and dance held in the evening also exceeded all previous efforts and was greatly appreciated by all present. Capt. Allen recited the "Absentminded Beggar," and then took up a collection in his tambourine which reali?!d £6 Is (id. Mr. May sang "John Bull," and held the audience from the w'.nd "go." Messrs Hooker and Hoodie also contributed items which were greatly appreciated. Among our local singers were Mrs. Evans, Misses Black and Benton, and Messrs Pickering, Duff, Patterson, and A. Swinton. The programme was brought to a close by a few local ladies and gentlemen giving a dialogue entitled "The Breach of Promise Case." The whole of the profits on the dav's outing are to be devoted to the relief funs, which will benefit cbnsiderably, as the takings were in the vicinity of £l2O.
