That we shall succeed is assured by God's mercy, by our unanimous will for victory, and by the pledge of every sacrifice for the Fatherland. The reward will be a flourishing national life, enabling the German people to develop in freedom and strength, that will be the crown to the proud structure of which Bismarck laid the foundation." (The population of Prussia is 40 millions, and that of the whole of Germany (i 5 millions. Assuming the loss has been equally spread, the total casualties would amount to 1,841,000. Adding the lnttes from disease it is clear that Germany has lost at least two millions of her best troops. Many of these, however, will be patched up and return to the front.)
