EMPEROR'S PEACE OVERTURES.
AN APPEAL TO THE POPE,

The newspaper Russkal Slovo says that after the failure of the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef's appeal to the Pope to overcome the. Kaiser's obstinate desire to continue the war regardless of consequences, the Emperor asked the Pope to try to conclude a separate peace with Russia, the terms including' the surrender of Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Ge.licia. Russian military circles do not believe this practicable while the AustroGerman armies are interwoven and Berlin is directing the plan of. campaign in the Carpathians.
AUSTRIANS TIRED OF WAR,
Rome, April 2. The Austrian people are tired of privations and reverses and arc agitating for the stopping of the war. There have been violent demonstrations in several cities. In Vienna there were shouts of "Down with the war. Down with the army. Down with the generals." There were attempts to stone the War Office. The police and troops charged, wounding several and arresting many.
