TIIEFT OF OIL.

At the Magistrate's Court, Thomas Wm. Scott pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing at Christchurch 011 March 18 twelve drums of oil, valued at £l2, and a bundle of copper rods, valued at £5, the property of the Sliaw, Savill and Albion Company. Sub-inspector Hastie said Scott had been 'boatswain's mate 011 the steamer Tainui, and took the oil and copper from the ship and handed them over to another man. The Magistrate enquired whether there wore not others to be charged 111 connection with the theft of this material. The sub-inspector said that two other men had been charged with- theft, and two more with . receiving stolen goods. These cases liad been adjourned till Wednesday next at Lyttelton. It was understood that a plea of not guilty would be entered by the other accused.
ITis Worship said that all the cases should be brought to Christchureh for hearing,, as it would have an effect upon the sentence he would inflict upon Seott when he knew what attitude he had taken up in regard to giving evidence. Accused was remanded till Wednesday next for sentence. The police are to arrange for the removal of tiie hearing of the other cases to Christchurch.
