Stratford News

J (From Our Resident Reporter.) I Stratford, Friday. Reports from the boys of the Stratford School at present in camp at Moumolmki show that they are thoroughly enjoying themselves. On Wednesday they were taken to the Wavcrley Agricultural and Pastoral Show. The boys put iu a full day's work each day. They rise at 7 a.111., at 7.30 drill starts; then breakfast. The work starts at !) a.m., and finishes at 3, after which an hour is devoted to taking notes and writing. Then an hour is occupied in a lecture by one of the farm instructors. Some of the boys are very observant. One lad writes to say that the crop of carrots, mangolds, and turnips; are not very good this season, the dry weather interfering with their growth, hut he savs there is a magnificent crop of British Queen potatoes. The boys' camp ends to-morrow, when they will return home by the express train.

The funeral of the late Mr AV. P. Pearce at the Koupatama Cemetery this afternoon was very largclv attended. Settlers from the Toko district were present in very large Vrs. The Rev. C. Howard, vie:'"* o{ Stratford, officiated at the graveside. The Rev. W. iA. Butter, formerly vicar of this parish, who resigned to reside in England, has returned to the Dominion, and is expected on a visit to Stratford shortly; At the Magistrate's Court to-da.v, four Territorials were before the court for non-attendance at drill. Two were fined 40s and costs, in default fourteen days' military detention. The other two were each fined os and 20s. or seven (lavs' military detention. The Magistrate also gave a warning that any Territorial interfering with the parades would be severely dealt with.

An inquest was opene<l tins morning, before Mr S. "R. Tlnnter f Acting-Coroner) and a jury, on the body of W. T. Pearce. After evidence of the inquest was adjourned till Thursday next. Jn the menntime, the iury is lo visit the scene of the aectuciTt at Toko. Mr R. Spenro watched the proceedings on behalf of the widow.
