ALLEGED SLANDER

A OISBORNE CASE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, March 18. The Supreme Court ia engaged in hearing the civil action Dr. William Patrick McEldowney, of Portsmouth, Gisborne, a claim for £6OOO damages for slander. The statement of claim alleges that defendant, who is the niece of one James Gibson, deceased, spoke defamatory words concerning plaintiff (a nephew of deceased), alleging that he was given to drink, and, aa a consequence, Gibson's will was altered and a clause devising land valued at £6OOO to plaint iff was revoked, no provision being made for him. Evidence in support of plaintiff's ease was taken in England. Defendant denied the use of the words and pleaded privilege. The case is proceeding.
