OBITUARY.
MR J. J. ELWIN. . - An old and highly respected resident of Taranaki passed away at his residence, MoleaWoi'th .Street*, Now Ply-* mouth, yesterday morning; in the 'person of Mr J. J. Ehvin, who was for many years farming at Warca, and lias since his retirement, pome eight years ago, resided in New .Plymouth. " The late Mr Khvin was educated at Morton Hall, City of London School, and P.ruce Castle, and studied with his father, Mr .Token Khvin, Broad Street Place, for the medical profession, hut on account ot delicate health decided to come out to the colonies. He came to New Zealand in 1850, and joined the office;, of Messrs Cookson and Bowlers, of Lvttelton, but again his health gave way, and he then joined Messrs Henry find Robert Sheet's survey party in ITawke's Bay, and was subsequently offered the Clivc School, which he accepted. The war breaking out, lie took up nn appointment in Canterbury at the Templeton School, and was later in charge of the Halswell School After being there for seven years, he was offer, ed the West Christchiirch School. After severe illness induced him to l<-iv town and accept the Southbridge School. The teaching profession, however, did not' appear to agree with the late Mr Elwin's health, and lie relinquished it and commenced;farming. He was farming m the Canterbury district for about four years,'and new land being opened up in this district he came to Taranaki and took a West Coast Settlement lease at Wnrea._ For a while, too. he accepted a position under the Taranaki Education Board, being appointed to the Upnnake School, and subsequently opened the first school at Warca. Ho afterwards engaged in farming in this ' istuct, and was always prominent in any matter that tended towards its progress. _ fie was a director of the iVarca Dairy Factory, and a prominent' member of the Cape Egmont Horticultural Society. As a newspaper correspondent, lie kept his district well before the public, and also contributed numerous articles to newspapers over the initials J.J.E. For many years he had taken a keen interest in the oil industry, and was on the directorate of the Taranaki Company, and also that of the Inglcwood Oil Boring and Prospecting Company. He married at an early age the second daughter of Mr hrederiek Rossiter, Sulyarde House, Chr.stchurch, and leaves a widow and six children—Mrs Clothier (of Warca) 1 , (Now Plymouth), Mrs MLachlan (Matatawa), Mrs Robinson (Rotorua), .eg. Elwin (Puniho), and J. J. Ehvin (Te Puke), also 32 grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren The funeral of the late Mr Ehvin will take place at the Te Henui Cemetery at 2.30 to-morrow afternoon.
