NORMAN.BY. (From our Own ■Correspondent). There is a good deal of activity in connection with the ppunake railway, which commence? Nt the Te Heti end Several contractors - have left here to commence operations, and it has given quite a fillip to labtrr in that .district. It is expected that in a fortnight's time some 200 men will be enjjtloyed . The 'bus which \raa running between Normanby and Hawera for many years, has now ceased plying for hire, as from Monday last. There is room for a motor service that would leave Okaiawa for Hawera, and take passengers and luggage in time to eatch tho mail train from New Plymouth lin 'the :morning. The secretary of the Horticultural Society reports a credit in 'connection with the late show, and this in spite of the wet afternoon on the see. ond day is very gratifying Indeed. The Presbyterians held tlieir harvest festival services on Sunday last at'Okaiawa, when the attendanocß were large. Tho Rev. J. W. Butler conducted the afternoon service, und Mt ,1. S. S. Murray was the preaej-er 'the evening. The ehurcii was prettily decorated with fruit and flowers. On Monday evening, a social was held in the Town Hall, and the sum of £l2 5s was realised. (The chairman announced that a. portion of this would be used to instal the electric light in the chureh. Solon were rendered by Meadamcs. Archbold (encored), I Butler, and Miss Laureat; a duct by Butler, and Miss Laurent; a duet by Mrs Butler and Miss Laurent, and several games and competitions were indulged in. The Normanby Presbyterian Church will hold harvest on Sunday next, tne Kevs. Shore- and Buticr being the preachers. A social takes place i on Monday evening.
