MEETING OF TARANAKI OO.M- - 'iAffIT.EE. A meeting of tlie Taranaki Licensing Committee was held at the Courthouse, Aew I lymouth, yesterday, Mr A. Crooke S.M., presiding. TJiorc were also present Messrs \\ L, Newman, J. B. Connett, JJ. Ji. McDonald, and F. l>. Corkill IV- only application before the' committeo wa 3 that of Rebecca Tabor for a transfer of the license of 'the White t n- H A tc , l ,. to 11 L ' S - Brookman. Mr. J. 11. Quil lain appeared in support of t ie application. _ There was no objection to the application on the part of the police, and the transfer was granted Ihe committee fixed the fee for conditional licenses for the next three years at £1 per day.

THE TERMINUS HOTEL. Mr - (-'orkill call «l attention to the condition of tire Terminus Hotel building and desired to move: "That in the opinion of this committee the time has arrived for the replacement of the present old and unsuitable buildino- lj. censed as the Tenninus Hotel by a structure more in keeping with the requirements of the town and the travelling public; that the owner and licensee be notifiiejl that the committee expects that plana be submitted at the J una meeting for a new house to :be 1 erected before December 31 next." He suggested that the meeting be adjourned for a fortnight to enable the members of the committee to inspect th e premises and make inquiries, and see for themselves whether the house was suitable 1 for the requirements of the town. It had been there for' nearly 50 years, and in his opinion was a disgrace. He wanted the committee to bestir themselves and go and look through it. The police in -their report on the building said it want-. Ed renovating, but he would go further and say it wanted rebuilding entirely. Mr. McDonald thought it would" be better to discuss the matter at the annual meeting, when such matters were usually dealt with. Mr. Corkill said his object in desiring to bring the matter forward now was so that it could not be said at the annual meeting, when the renewal of the license would be applied for, that the question of rebuilding had been sprung upon the parties interested. He certainly thought it should be dealt with during the present month. He moved tihat in view of the terms of the Act, and in view of the police report on the Terminus Hotel, the meeting be adjourned for a fortnight to enable members to inspect feho premises, and also gave formal notice that he would then bring forward the motion he had handed in.

The Chairman said it was the usual practice for such matters to ho brought before the committee by the police oi by the health authorities, and he asked whether Mr. Corkill's object was to talk to the Press.

Mr, Corkill said he had been a member of tlie Licensing Committee years ago, and was not a novice to the "'business, and was not going to be a dummy. He was not going to be led by the police or anyone else. If he felt a matter wanted ventilating, h e intended to bring it forward.

Mr. Connett objected to Mr. Corkill springing this question upon the committee without giving them time to consider the matter beforehand. If Mr. Corkill thought he was gojng to force thinffa on the committee he was mistaken, because they were not built that way.

Mr. Corkill replied that lie was not trying to force the committee to do anything. He had moved that the meeting he adjourned for a fortnight, so that the members ofthe committee could inspect the property, and acquaint themselves with its condition before they discussed his motion. He intimated that so long as he was on the committee he intended to make his voice heard upon such matters. ■Sub-Inspector Fouhy said that the police liad no desire to lead anybody in such matters. The reason there was not a full and detailed report upon the condition of the premises was that it was usual to deal with such ouestions at the annual meeting of the committee in .Time. TTe would present a special report. upon this hotel at that meeting. Mr. Corkill's motion was not seconded, and therefore lapsed.
