A GREAT WORK.
CARIXG FOR OLD SOLDIERS' GRAVES.
A recent visitor to New Plymouth has been Miss E; Stathttm, who has been appointed by the Government to solely attend to matters connected with the caring of old soldiers' graves. Miss Statham lias visited many of the districts identified with the early fighting days and has expressed herself as very pleased with the way the work initiated by the Victoria League and later taken up by the Government is progressing. The Government is co-operating with the public in the various towns and is subsidising money raised for the purpose of caring for the graves of the old soldiers. LAn annual grant is to be made to the New Plymouth Borough Council for looking after the graves of the soldiers interred here. A monument is to be erected at Waitara to commemorate the great work done by the soldiers of the early days in laying the foundation of Taran&ki'a present prosperity, and it is expected that the monument will be erected this mouth in the old soldiers' cemetery. At Normanby a handsome cairn has been erected by the residents, and at Waihi (Ilawera) another memorial has been built.
A proposal was made before the war started to erect a cairn at New Plymouth in honor 'of our gallant fighters, subsequent events have allowed the matter to be temporarily dropped.
