A GIRL DROWNED.
WHILE SURF BATIIINO AT NAIHIER. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association, Napier, Last Night. A sad fatality occurred on the beach this morning. A girl named Florence -Miller, 17 years of age, was bathing in tile surf with three friends, when t'.u backwash carried her out. A young man named Andrew 'Robertson made a gallant attempt at rescue, but was twice thrown violently on the beach and narrowly escaped losing his own !ife. The body was washed up an hour later, ha a mile from the place where it was carried in. A very heavy north-cast sea was running at tihe time. At the inquest this afternoon a member of the Life Saving Society expressed tho opinion that the Society should be given power to prevent 'lmtliing when the sea was dangerous. The Coroner advised that power should he taken bv the Borough Council to prevent surf-bathing when tiho breakers are dangerous. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
