If these crusted Tories thought they were going to displace him they had a tough proposition. Mr Appel states that the . Premier took exception to the statements. He had realised for some time that there liad been a lack of support from the Premi-'r to himself, and the position liad become so intolerable, that there ivas nothing to do but resign. CHARGES OF UNDUE INFLUENCE. Sydney, February 2-1. Mr Justice Ferguson has been appointed a Royal Commissioner to investigate the charges of alleged influence in connection with the Wheat Acquisition Act. " THE DANGER OF SOCIALISM. Adelaide, February 25. ■Mr Peake, in a policy speech, referred to the danger of socialism. The loss of the right to be free to work and live was none the less hitter and galling though it was indicted by a majority of the people in the trade unions instead of by the order of the Kaiser. He stated that legislation would be submitted giving immediate effect to the result of the referendum in favor of the early closing of hotels, the prohibition of the sale of liquor to minors, more effective licensing courts, and the prohibition of the sale of inferior liquor. It was not the Government's intention to increase taxation.
