THE DOGS.

Some fine dogs were benched, and aword of praise is duo to tlie stewards in this class for the care that was given to them, plenty of nutriment being also provided, a particularly keen enthusiast, being Mr T. Kirkwood. of Stratford.! Knglish setters, Irish setters, and (lordon setters were particularly strong' classes. The two last-named were challenge classes, and comprised dogs from as far north as Auckland, and as far south as Blenheim. Irish terriers were a particularly hot section, some of the best dogs in New Zealand being benched. Bull-dogs, too, were a fine lot, and cocker spaniels were very classy. Bull-dogs and fawn pugs were only moderate, nor were fox-terriers what they have been in former years. In Airedales. Mr Burton (of Opumike), showed a fine specimen of the breed. Harriers, for some reason or another, are not encouraged by other shows, but those entered by the North Taramiki Hunt were beautiful dogs. Oreyhonnds similarly show a falling-off. am] tirs is to be regretted in a district where there is so much coursing. Still some very fine animals were benched. There were also some nice collies shown. In. conversation with a News reporter, a well-known dog fancier considered that the reduction of the first prize-monev to .'is or (id less than the entry, in the ease of onlv one dog entering would have a detrimental effect on future entries, lie also regretted thdeletion of the ladies' bracelet from the programme. This had always proved a popular event. In the two challcni'e classes. ],.. considered that instead '.f only having two open classes in each, there should have been as ,manv as possible, because he pointed out'tint only champions had a hope of winning the challenge open class, and that the addition of other classes would have enabled many other d'er; to enter, am! would also have given the dogs that com,' from far distant parts an opportunity of securing some extra prize-money. The result of the competition for the best sporting dog or bitch, was as follows: Frank Halves (Tllenhiom). lilstone "Rim, Ir T. Kirl-tvood (Strafford). Countr Belle, 2: V. Ha nigra vo (New Plymouth). Tiger, .1.
