The Taranaki Show

PEOPLE'S DAY. A RECORD ATTENDANCE. The Taranaki Agricultural Society's fortieth annual show was continued at tlie racecourse, New Plymouth, yesterday. The day broke bright and wanr., and tempted townspeople and country folk in their thousands. Just prior to the (irand Parade, a shower came up, but it did not last long enough even to damp the fine array of dresses and millinery, worn by the ladies, who added colour and variety to the charming scene. The panoramic view of the ring and grounds during the Grand Parade was magnificent. The marshal, Mr L. A. Nolan, had complete control of the procession, and the animals were paraded in pood style, representative Shorthorns, Holstcins, Ayrshires, and Jerseys all disporting themselves as though aware that the eves of Taranaki were upon them. The horses, too, paraded gaily, from sturdy Clydesdale to prancing thorougubred and tiny Shetland. One wee pony, a bare handful, owned by Mr Martin, of Pukearuhe, and ridden by a four-year-old tot named Kathleen Bowman, drew considerable attention. The parade was in eye-opener to visitors to Taranaki, and All that Taranaki owed to its dairy cattle was typified in the well-dressed and well contented crowd, who appeared to have plenty of money to spend, and the great array of motor-cars which had brought many of them to the show, it is pleasing to note that the crowd did not fortret to be charitable, for a bevy of young ladies, organised by the Mayoress and Mrs Walker, were busy with collection boxes for the Belgian tund, which will benefit to the extent of £7(l as the result of their efforts.

Judging in the horso classes was proceeded with, the ring being fully oec-i----picd all the morning, and the judges hail seme fine types of horses submitted for their consideration. This' is all t!ie more pleasing, remembering the numlvir o* horses that have left the country tor military use abroad.. Anion™ the ponies the judge have great praise to the (hampion, which he considered the best pony lie had seen. The jumping and other competitions in the afternoon were followed closely by a keenly interested crowd, who were rewarded with a fine display of leaping. There were no spills, The horse that fell in the jumping the previous day was .not Mr McKenziVs Nellie, as reported, but another horse ridden by the same rider. The turning competition created great amusement. It was, however, brought on too late, for the majority of spectators had already left the ground. The various side-shows all nppeT-ed to do good business, the crowd being in a merry mood. The Citizens' Band, under Bandmaster Cummins, rendered a pleasing programme of music. *

The secretary and officials all worked well. On the whole, the judges' work, always difficult where the classes are so ey..-\. gave general satisfaction. Taken right through, the 1010 show must be written down as one of the most successful, from every point of view, ever held in the history of the Taranaki Agricultural Society.
