RAILWAYMEN'S CONFERENCE.
48-HOURS' WEEK DEMANDED. Wllington, February 23, At the Railwaymen's Conference today, some important questions on a. lengthy order-paper were reached, including that of a 48-hours' week A long;and interesting discussion ensued, indicating that the 48-hours' week, though accepted as a principle in outside employment, was definitely refused by the Minister of Railways in a recent interview It was pointed out that large numbers of railway men ate workingfrom 00 to 72 hours per week, without being adequately compensated, The conference was unanimous that a 48-hours'. week should prevail in every department of the service.
The general secretary's statement showed that the Society's assets liad almost doubled, having been increased by. £2454 12s. fld since the beginning of 1012. or just prior to the,last conference. Contributions to headquarters from branches amounted last year to a record' ceipts from the Railway Review also exceeded past records. The membership has increased from 5943 at the date of last conference in 1012 to 8247 at. September 30th last, which, on the whole, must be considered .very satisfactory. * The auditors'.reports and'cei'timM bal- : ance-sheets showed that the. society's assets, including cash on deposit, were nearly £7OOO. ,
